join us...join us... - Simply put: evil oozes from the speakers when you put this on and the Elder Gods are invoked. The perfect soundtrack to a horror movie that does not yet exist. Undisputably heavy, the new Electric Wizard Mark II is more focused and tighter than Mark I ever was, and this shows it definitively. Electric Wizard has shown that not only can doom/stoner metal be unbelievably heavy, but can also contain hooks that sink into your brain. The 70s-style production, atmosphere and art work (oh, how I wish I had this on LP!) complete the entire trip, and it s a trip that s worth taking over and over. Absorbing and addictive like some strange drug, this deserves to be blasted through large speakers at a volume big enough to terrify the neighbors, which it will if they are exposed to it. Great stuff, the best doom/stoner band out there in top form.
over the top - Their best, IMHO. Like it better than Dopethrone, I just couldn t take the vocals on that, too much distortion for me. Torquemada 71 is great, one of my favorite songs ever. OK this is almost like pop music, only real SLOW and loud. Anyway, if you like Sleep, Kyuss, Hawkwind etc you ll for sure dig this. And they sure LOOK better than ever.
Child of Dunwich, Massachusetts,...RISE! - More of a vintage feel than any of their previous albums. They strike the chord from the git-go, and they just keep it up.Lyrics like, Legalize drugs, and murder. This album might be a more-rounded album than even Dopethrone. Yeah, I said it! Buy Dopethrone first, though.
I agree with the guy who didn t like it - I m a huge fan, but this album isn t good. I think the last two albums are major divergences from the bands no frills doom vibe. It s kind of a diluted, cheesier version of albums past. It s not as heavy, but it s more than that. Its lost its cohesiveness and grit. I don t know how else to say it, it s hard to articulate why a band isn t good anymore. maybe its a classic jump the shark... they lost it and I don t think they ll ever get it back. Sort of like Metallica once they put out the black album... I can see they re trying but the departed band members vision and creativity is gone forever. Maybe they re trying too hard to be something they re not anymore.I don t think its the best album since Dopethrone, I think Let Us Prey was, and since then its all been kind of pathetic. Go buy their earlier stuff if you want to know what the Kings of doom metal were all about, this one just isn t worth the money. I don t mean any disrespect to this band, in years past the crown of kings of doom metal was worn proudly by these gods of doom for a very long time.Don t look mom, the kings aren t wearing clothes anymore!
Back with a bong! - One of the few bands that do this type of music the right way. I love the sense of humor in the lyrics. The one about Count Drugula is awesome. Too many of these bands take themselves WAAAY too seriously and forget the rock n roll elements to Sabbath. Chances are if you re really into stoner/doom metal you won t like Mighty High...In Drug City, but check it out anyway. You ll like the album cover at least.
